Geneva-based luxury good makers Compagnie Financiere Richemont SA announced today that Executive Chairman Johann Rupert, Richemont’s leading figure and a member of the controlling family, will also act as Chief Executive Officer as of April 2010, replacing Norbert Platt who will step down for health reasons.

Executive Chairman Rupert’s assumption of the additional role of CEO has been anticipated by some analysts, as he has held the position in the past. But there has also been speculation that other executives such as Chief Financial Officer Richard Lepeu, Cartier head Bernard Fornas, or Jaeger-LeCoultre top manager Jerome Lambert may take on the position.

Rupert, born in 1950, said he doesn’t plan to stay on “ad infinitum,” indicating he would retire once the current economic crisis is through.

“We see the announcement of Johann Rupert resuming the position of CEO as a positive move as he was always responsible for strategy,” Bank Vontobel analyst Rene Weber said. He upgraded the stock to buy from hold.

MP3 players are becoming an increasingly standard piece of workout equipment. Music can help keep runners "in the zone" or help keep weight lifters’ adrenaline pumping, and audio books and podcasts can help us make more efficient use of our workout time. Now that MP3 players are small enough, battery life is long enough, hard drives and flash memory is large enough, and prices are low enough, just about any athlete can have access hours of audio content anywhere their workout takes them.

But not all the problems have been solved. Although the iPod’s user interface is widely considered revolutionary for its simplicity and intuitiveness, there’s no getting around the fact that interacting with an MP3 player while working out is usually not very convenient. Removing your iPod from wherever it’s stashed can be tricky while running, and after you’ve managed to retrieve it, the controls can be clumsy to use and the screen difficult to see. Of course, the risk of fiddling with your MP3 player too much while working out is that it can easily break your concentration and flow.

• Integrated iPod controls. You can use the Timex iControl to wirelessly play or pause your iPod, move to the next or previous track, and to adjust the volume. The iControl is compatible with the first generation 1, 2, and 4GB iPod nano, the second generation iPod nano (aluminum), and the 5th generation 30, 60, and 80GB iPods (video).
• 99-lap, 100 hour chronograph with a resolution of 1/100th of a second. You can even customize the layout of the chronograph to suit your particular needs or tastes.
• Chronograph recall. You can use the recall function to review your last workout. Scroll through up to 50 laps, and see an overall lap average as well as your best lap time.
• Countdown timer. The Timex iControl has a standard countdown timer that goes up to 23 hours, 59 minutes, and 59 seconds. It can be configured to automatically repeat, or to stop after time has elapsed.
• Interval timer. An interval timer allows you to set two countdown timers which elapse and sound alarms consecutively. This is useful if you use the increasingly popular walk/run method of distance and endurance training where you improve your overall time by taking regular walk breaks so that you don’t slow down toward the end of a long race.
• Three semi-programmable alarms. A programmable alarm allows you to specify the date as well as the time at which an alarm will sound. Daily alarms, on the other hand, sound at the specific time every day, which is generally less useful since we typically use alarms to remind us of irregular events. The Timex iControl has three alarms which I call "semi-programmable". You can’t set the exact date on which they will sound, but you can choose between weekdays, weekends, or daily.
• Multiple time zones. The Timex iControl will keep track of the time and date in three different time zones. It uses a very simple approach to multi-time zone support: rather than being preprogrammed with cities, time zones, daylight savings rules, etc., it simple provides you with three date and time "slots" which you can set any way you want. Sometimes the simplest approach is all you need.
• Day and date display. This may seem like a small thing, but not enough digital watches show you both the day and the date simultaneously. Yes, I’m aware of the fact that I should be able to remember the day of the week, and I usually do, but when I’ve been putting in a few 12-hour days in row, sometimes they start running together. I really like watches that make it easy for me double check the day at the same time I’m checking the date.
• INDIGLO illumination. The Timex iControl has an excellent electroluminescent function. Rather than illuminating the entire LCD, only the digits are illuminated which makes them very crisp and easy to read. The iControl can also be put into "night-mode" which lights up the digits when any button is pushed to make operating the watch in the dark much easier.
• Water resistant to 100 meters, or about 330 feet.

Although the most interesting feature of the Timex iControl is certainly its ability to remotely control your iPod, I do want to point out that even without the iPod functionality, it’s actually a very nice sports watch. It’s so light, and the webbed strap is so soft and airy, that it’s very easy to forget that it’s on your wrist. The bezel has a nice shine to it, and the LCD is one of the highest contract displays I’ve seen on a digital watch. The fit and finish of the Timex iControl is clearly a step up from previous IRONMAN models.

But let’s be honest: wirelessly controlling your iPod from your watch is extremely cool, and not just for athletes. Although my iControl mainly accompanies me to the gym, once you start wearing it around, all kinds of additional uses start to become apparent. As Paul pointed out in our original Timex iControl post, if you connect your iPod to your car stereo through an auxiliary input, you can essentially control your car stereo with your watch which is easier and probably much safer than messing with your iPod while driving. I even found the iControl extremely useful while walking around the city one day since I was able to keep my iPod buried in my backpack. Of course, having to push a button on your watch before you can talk to people may come across as a bit strange, but in my opinion, it’s all part of the fun.

Supplies are a bit limited right now, but eventually the Timex iControl will be available in seven different colors (black, black/silver, light gray, blue, pink, orange, and green). Retail price is $125, if you’re lucky enough to find one in stock.

Update (4/15/2005): From Watch Report reader Victor Shiff, “The 1/1000 timer from TAG Heuer is not the first such watch. Some 12+ years ago (from fallible memory), Casio had several watches with 1/1000 second (1 ms) chronograph functions, cheaper than $1300 too!. There is an unstated problem with these 1 ms chronographs and that is the contact bounce of the button contacts that the watch circuitry has to ignore. This bounce can be from 5 ms to as much as 15 ms and is not necessarily repeatable. What this means to me is the 1 ms is marketing hype.”

Thanks, Victor. I noticed shortly after publishing this article that the Seiko Sportura World Time (SNJ005) quietly launched with a millisecond timer. Maybe what TAG meant is that they had the most expensive such watch, or perhaps the coolest looking. I’ll give them that.

Gustafsson & Sjogren watches are the result of a partnership between Swedish knifesmith Johan Gustafsson and Swedish watchmaker Patrik Sjogren. What do knifes have in common with watches? According to their website, Damscus steel “is Pattern welded steel. It is a technique that has been used more than thousand years. Some say the technique comes from Asia, some say from the Middle East (Damascus), others say it comes from Scandinavia and the Vikings. No one knows for sure. In those days, the technique was used to create stronger and better swords than the enemy. The forging became so refined that even today’s specialists wonder how it was done. One of the results is that a very nice pattern appears in the steel , when slightly etched in acid, or when the patina of using it a long time shows on the surface of the steel. In those days a very good sword and knife smith, was worth his weight in gold.

The Blizzard has a Damascus steel dial in a twisted explosion pattern. The chapter ring is hand shaped and made of grade-5 titanium. The case combines different finishing techniques with large diameter bezel and case back as unusual design elements. The watch is equipped with a finished Unitas/ETA 6498 movement. The finishing has been done by Soprod, who has also further improved the movement to chronometre grade standard with a screwed balance. The case has sapphire crystal and measures 42×12mm.

The Aurora has a shimmering green damascus dial that resemble northern lights. The indexes are titanium and the reindeer strap is handmade in traditional sapmi technique with non-chemical tanning of the leather and tin ornaments. The case combines different finishing techniques with large diameter bezel and case back as unusual design elements. Like the Blizzard, the Aurora is equipped with a beautifully finished Unitas/ETA 6498 movement. The finishing has been done by Soprod, who has also improved the movement to chronometre grade standards with a screwed balance.

Retail prices are $6,300/$6,400.

The Rolex Sydney Hobart Race is slowly drawing to its finale. The Line Honors have already been taken, while 87 yachts are still out at sea and eight yachts have managed to complete the race. The exciting 628 nautical mile race is steadily nearing its end for the season. The race has been witness to a fleet with crews that represent countries like the USA, Great Britain, New Zealand, Australia, Spain, the Netherlands as well as New Caledonia. The morning of 29^th December, 2009 saw the podium fill up with the yachts coming ashore and a clear winner emerged. Alfa Romeo was the first to come home, while Wild Oats XI came in second and ICAP Leopard rang in on number three. Wild Oats XI was 2 hours and 3 minutes behind Neville Crichton’s Alfa Romeo. ICAP Leopard finished the race at 05:45 which was 5 hours and 40 minutes short of Wild Oats XI’s time.

Investec Loyal, previously known as Maximus, came in fourth when it finished the race at 07:34 on Tuesday morning. Investec Loyal is a 100 ft maxi which has been designed by Greg Elliot. Niklas Zennstrom’s Ran came in on the fifth position when it finished the race at 09:27. Ran is a 72 ft yacht from Great Britain which has been designed by Judel/Volijk. By coming in on the fifth position and making good time, Ran stands a good chance of winning the Tattersall’s Cup. Since Ran was the first yacht that finished the race on IRC corrected time, it has ensured its standing to win the major trophy of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race. Ran has also been successful in denying Alfa Romeo the rare opportunity of a handicap/line honors.

With 87 boats still out at sea, the eight that have managed to finish the race on Tuesday have reason to rejoice. While all eight deserve line honors; however, the podium can only bestow it upon the top three. From the very beginning the competition was said to be only a three way battle among the 100 footers: Wild Oats XI, Alfa Romeo and ICAP Leopard, with only the order left to be decided by the race. Alfa Romeo picked up speed during the first night into the race and also the lead. The next day Alfa Romeo picked up an early start and gained almost 30 miles before Wild Oats XI could even make a start. The early start is what gave Alfa Romeo the much needed edge and lead over its near-sister yachts. Mark Richards of Wild Oats XI took the defeat graciously and stated that it was a tactical race and the lead that Alfa Romeo managed was difficult to counter. Mike Slade of ICAP Leopard was not very pleased though as his gamble of sailing farther offshore did not pay off and he stated that it was not their day from the very beginning of the race. Nonetheless, Alfa Romeo conquered the waves and worked the winds to its advantage to emerge the winner and grab the Line Honors at the 2009 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race which is reason enough for the entire crew and tacticians to rejoice and ring in the New Year on an ecstatic note.
